Maximising Masculinity Through Accessories: The Ultimate Drag King Superpower
Aug 01, 2024The power of accessories in a Drag King costume, cannot be underestimated. Let’s be honest, masculine clothing doesn’t typically lend itself to the stage. When your costume consists of slacks, a shirt and maybe a tie, it’s easy to fall into the trap of looking like Bill from Accounts.
Accessories are your secret superpower to take your costume from boring to showstopping. It’s the easiest way to add bling and to bedazzle your audience. You want your costume to catch the light.
I’ve got the power!
Certain accessories give an air of authority. Watches. Belts. Rings. Sunglasses. Try on your costume without accessories. Then watch as your masculine presence expands when you add these accessories.
Masculine jewellery: Shine On
- Chunky Rings: Opt for rings with bold designs. Look for styles like signet or band rings that exude strength and masculinity. A ring with a matte finish or a gemstone centerpiece can add just the right amount of sparkle.
- Statement Watches: A hefty, masculine watch can serve as a dazzling accessory. Go for ones with metallic bands or interesting dials to catch the audience's eye.
- Bold Jewellery: Oversized necklaces and bracelets with sparkling elements can add a powerful and edgy touch to your costume.
- Eye-Catching Cufflinks and Tie Clips: These small but mighty pieces can add sophistication and personality to your attire. Choose ones with intricate designs or subtle glitz to ensure they pop under stage lights.
Hats: Topping Off with Flair
A key part of any Drag King look can be what you wear on your head. From hats to beanies, the options are plenty, and each can add a different vibe to your persona.
- Fedoras and Trilbys: These hats scream old-school charm and can be the perfect top-off to a stylish suit. Look for ones with a metallic band or subtle glitter detailing for added flair - or add your own!
- Bandanas and Caps: For a more casual and edgy look, bandanas and snapback caps can be your go-to. A bandana with a cool design or a sparkly cap can bring a rebellious touch to your look.
- Top Hats: If you’re going for a dramatic flair, nothing beats a top hat. Add a glitter band or a feather for that extra touch of glam.
Ties and Bowties: A Nod to Dapper
Taking your Drag King look to the next level requires attention to detail. Use accessories that stand out under the spotlight. Here’s how you can make them work for you:
- Bold Patterns and Colors: Don't shy away from ties with bold patterns or vibrant colors. Stripes, polka dots, or even paisley designs can add personality to your look.
- Textured Tie Clips: A tie clip can be both practical and stylish. Look for ones with textures or small embellishments to catch the light as you move.
- Sparkly Bowties: When you really want to make a statement, a sequin bowtie can add a playful twist to your outfit.
Final Touches: The Extras
Beyond the usual suspects, there are other accessories that can take your look to the next level:
- Statement Belts and Braces/Suspenders: Opt for belts with bold, sparkly and oversized buckles. Choose braces in bright colours or sequins to ensure they catch the audience’s eye.
- Flashy Pocket Squares: Choose pocket squares with metallic threads, sequins, or bold prints. The extra shimmer and colour will make your suit jacket pop under stage lights.
- Elaborate Gloves: Go for gloves with embellishments like studs, rhinestones, or even LED lights. These can add a dramatic flair and elevate your hand movements.
- Striking Eyewear: Try adding sunglasses with mirrored lenses to enhance your look. Or clear frames with unique designs can add an element of mystery and style.
- Distinctive Shoes: Choose shoes that stand out, whether it’s shiny dress shoes, colourful sneakers, or boots with unique designs. They should complement your stage outfit and be comfortable enough for your performance.
- Vibrant Scarves: A scarf with bold colours, patterns, or textures can add a dynamic element to your look, especially during dramatic movements.
Remember, stage accessories are about making a statement and capturing the audience's attention. A costume is not something you'd wear down the street. It might just be what you'd wear to the Mardi Gras After Party! Accessories are a Drag King’s superpower.
Have fun.
