Why We Love Drag Kingdom: True Stories from the Kings Who Keep Coming Back

drag kingdom Oct 31, 2024

Thursday 14th November marks the much-anticipated end-of-year show for Drag Kingdom, the biannual reunion of the Kings of Joy and the largest ongoing Drag King showcase on earth.

This isn’t just a performance – it’s a gathering of community, talent, and joy that celebrates the art of Drag Kinging, with participants who range from emerging to established Kings. With each show, Drag Kingdom reaffirms its place as a groundbreaking space for personal expression, growth, and sheer entertainment. If you’re seeking an unforgettable night of drag, celebration, and connection, here’s why this is the event you don’t want to miss.

Drag Kingdom, created by the visionary Danica Lani, The King Coach, is the world’s largest recurring Drag King showcase, offering a transformative platform for Kings of Joy. With roots in Sydney, Australia, Drag Kingdom is a twice-a-year phenomenon where Drag Kings – both established and emerging – bring their alter egos to life on stage. This community isn’t just about performance; it’s a space where connection, self-expression, and empowerment thrive.

Our last event in June was filled with unforgettable moments, as you’ll see from our Kings’ testimonials. Whether you’re an aspiring King or a devoted supporter, this night brings you into a community where everyone is celebrated.

Unleashing the Joy – The Drag Kingdom Experience

A Night Like No Other

For many, Drag Kingdom isn’t just an event; it’s the highlight of their year. Take it from Lara, AKA Rainbowgan, who declared, “It’s just the best night ever! Like not even just in my top 10 nights of the year, THE BEST one!” There’s an electric atmosphere when the Kings of Joy reunite – a sense of celebration that can only come from a truly inclusive, uplifting community.

Building Confidence and Conquering Fears

One of the most powerful aspects of Drag Kingdom is how it allows performers to take their newfound confidence off-stage. Tori, AKA Bob’s Bulges, shared a story of growth beyond the Drag King persona: “Last night was so much fun, and everyone performed so well! I’m so proud to be part of this community of such talented (and hot) kings!”

Tori goes on to reflect how performing helped her in her work life: “I presented my first client debrief today, and while internally I was freaking out, I kept channelling Bob’s energy and reminded myself that if I can dance on stage in drag and in front of 100 people, I can do a boring work meeting.” For Tori and so many others, Drag Kingdom is a confidence-boosting experience that stretches far beyond the stage.

Rediscovering Inspiration Through Connection

For some, Drag Kingdom has been a healing experience. Natalie, AKA Rex McCooch, attended her first show with hesitation but left feeling re-inspired. “Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. It was really healing to connect with this lovely community in person again,” she shared. “Really inspiring, too. I’m starting to actually feel excited by the idea of putting together a performance of my own – I was a tiny bit afraid I might never feel that kind of motivation again.”

Drag Kingdom isn’t only about the thrill of performing; it’s a space for reconnecting with a love for drag, creativity, and self-expression.

A Transformative Journey for Every King

The journey of participating in Drag Kingdom is a ride full of joy, vulnerability, and personal transformation. Nagore, AKA Lalo Land, sums it up best: “It’s a fantastic journey to experience; it’s fun, emotional, and full of joy.” Every King who takes the stage brings their unique story and style, adding to the fabric of this vibrant, welcoming community.

A Welcoming Audience, An Inclusive Stage

For many Kings, Drag Kingdom offers a unique experience where the audience is just as much a part of the journey as the performers themselves. Jo, AKA Bad Boy Cameo, describes it as an empowering environment for all: “It is a space for new and seasoned performers. An inclusive audience who is ready for everyone to succeed. Just do it!” Here, everyone has a place, and whether you’re a rookie King or a Kings of Joy All-Star, the audience is there to support and uplift.
